General requirements

  • You have been a lawful permanent resident of the U.S. for at least 5 years
  • You have been a lawful permanent resident of the U.S. for at least 3 years if you got married to a US Citizen
  • You have not traveled more than 6 months aboard during the past 3 to 5 years
  • Personal income tax records within 5 years
  • Have a good moral character and must pass the civic oral/reading/writing exams of the U.S. history and English test

Exemptions from English and Civics Requirements

Some applicants are exempt from the English requirement for naturalization based on their age since he/she became a permanent resident.  These applicants must still take the civics test.

Age 50 or older 20 years civics test in your language
Age 55 or older 15 years civics test in your language
Age 65 or older 20 years simplified civics test in your language
